What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Not every plumbing problem is an emergency, but several situations are โ and recognizing them quickly limits damage.
Clear emergencies
Burst pipes, active leaks soaking drywall or flooring, sewer backups, overflowing toilets that won't stop, gas smells near a water heater, and no hot water during cold weather all qualify as emergencies.
Borderline situations
A single slow drain or a dripping faucet usually isn't urgent. A leak that's small but constant should still be addressed promptly to prevent hidden damage.
What to do first
Shut off the water at the fixture or main supply, contain the spill if you can, then call. Photograph the damage for insurance.
